CHAPTER 5
CHAPTER 5
Almost half of the non-fairy population of Aira Niluc is gone.
Some may be feeling the absence of their fellow participants in this story. Others will stay focused on the wish they want to get. What never changes is that the story goes on, bringing you closer to the end -- and to another chapter. What will it bring this time?
Snow!
Snow as far as the eye can see, a cold blanket covering the new area. Some winter amenities are now available, ready for perusal! But that's not all there's to find: everyone also will find reminders of their homes, of people they know, of happier times.
Of their wishes.
Who will try to reach their wish this time?
[[Welcome to Week 5! Feel free to make top levels at your discretion, and remember to note it in your header if you plan on investigating any locations. However, please try to keep investigations to Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday! You can also privately contact Hamelin at your leisure.
In addition, a reminder that any Murder Proposals for this week are due by Tuesday 3:00 PM EST/12:00 PM PST! However, please note that you have the option of submitting murder proposals for a later week as well.]]
MONDAY

Throughout the week characters will get glimpses of their loved ones at home when they look at a reflective surface, who are supportive of each character's wish. These images can be glimpsed by other characters if desired, and may be short in duration: a fleeting image that appears for a second, or several minutes long in duration.

investigation!
Most of the new locations don't really hold his interest for long, which makes this seem like a wasted trip - at least until he wanders into the ice maze. If you've also entered and are wandering around, you'll likely come across Yeager at some point. He holds up a hand in greeting and cheerfully asks:]
Do you think we'll ever find our way back out?
[........he's definitely lost. Guess who didn't try to keep track of where he was going and just assumed it'd work out for him!!!
Though while he's horribly lost in here, he's also going to investigate just to see if there's anything particularly weird left behind here!! Starting from the eldritchy location, does it seem like there's anything off about this section compared to the others aside from the weird decorations?
Anyway, adventures in snow land were sort of a bust, so Yeager heads back to change and then off to Onigashima. Come join him for some of the games if you want! He's not particularly interested in the prizes, but he definitely enjoys the shooting games and will almost always score very well at them. When he notices your presence, Yeager will wave you over.]
So, which of these locations do you like the most so far? We have quite the odd selection of places to spend our time, ja?
[Eventually he does end up getting bored, so after grabbing a snack he wanders off to the archery range! He's been by here a few times, but it's not like he can practice with his own weapon, so... After a little bit of consideration, he finally picks up a bow to examine it. It's not long before Yeager's trying it out - you can find him shooting at a target with a lot more skill than someone who just picked up a bow for the first time would have. His movements are slower and less precise than his usual weapon; it's like he's rusty rather than just copying what he's seen other people do. He's very focused as he shoots; feel free to come watch or bother him, he's not particularly opposed to company, but he does seem less cheerful than usual today.]

Investigation go!
[It's perhaps impossible not to be drawn to the newly opened swathes of snow, the polar opposite of the desert that was inflicted on them not-so-long-ago-but-feels-like-months-ago. It's quiet, it's lovely, it's all pristine and untarnished and it seems like there's no one for miles aroun--
Something rustles overhead. Something that sounds distinctly like the wind through the pines, but it's followed by a thunk and then a whump and then several more rustles in a row that sound faster and more ominous--
... Anyone passing underneath the pines in the new area will find that they have a tendency to outright dump snow on their heads, and also that one (1) Jack Vessalius has made the wonderful life choice of literally climbing through pine needles and scraping over pine bark to go halfway up a tree chasing one of the will-o'-the-wisps. He's up there half-draped in Christmas lights looking like an elf of some sort, reaching recklessly out for the little ball of light.]
Come, now... Must you be like this, come here...!
[This will end well.
Alternatively, you can spot him having caught one of them somehow, settled quietly high up in one of the trees. He's considerably harder to spot then, though, because he manages to be about as still and silent as a snowdrift for once.]
II. Some of Those Who Wander are Definitely Lost (Ice Maze)
[When he's not being a ridiculous tree ornament, Jack is mostly to be found in the maze; by the time he gets in there though his cheeks are red from the cold and you may be able to follow the sound of a sneeze or two despite the fact that he's quite practically (perhaps surprisingly) decked out in prime winter wear.
He doesn't seem particularly interested in getting back into the warmth, though; much of the time you'll stumble across him sitting on one of the tree roots or decorative ice vines either dazedly contemplating the snowfall or possibly that section of reflective wall (there is possibly snow on him by this point) or flopped on the ground heedless of his outfit making snow angels in the middle of the eldritch section.
Nothing to spruce up your gnarled hands and eyeballs like snow angels in a coat that make them look rather more like snowjellies.]
Ah, I find I've really missed the snowfall. I could stay here all day...
Did you want to try making one of these? I think it goes well, either way.
III. Pagan My Way Downtown, Walkin' Fast (Church/Investigation)
[Given the elusiveness of fairy intervention lately, perhaps the best way to find one of the creatures is to run directly into the church? Surely? Surely! Jack is going to finally get out of the cold at some point (hopefully it's warm in there because he is not smart enough to come in without being outright half-frozen) to invade the little church and call for fairies.]
Ah, is anyone here? I really would like to hold a conversation with the fairies in charge one of these days...
[He's so good at this. But on that note, is there anything or anypixie of note in the church?]

Now dressed for the weather, McGillis does make his way into the village and... not much further. People passing by can find him completely absorbed by staring at one of the floating fire balls. A minute passes, ten minutes pass... He jumps from vision to vision and can't seem to really drag himself away from them. His expression seems far, far, far away. Maybe he should get indoors and warm up properly sometime soon...
A while later, he can also be found in the church where he examines the stained glass. He still seems rather melancholy, but at least he's no longer completely absent-minded. ]
Appealing to nostalgia this insistently... talk about overdoing it, Hamelin.
[ In the evening meanwhile, McGillis is back in the lounge wearing his usual clothes. He is reading a fancy old-looking book labeled 'The Life of Agnika Kaieru' that does not appear to have come from the library - and more specifically it seems as though he's rereading the same few pages over and over and over. ]

[This morning finds Alexei in the church in the new area; he isn't familiar with whatever religion is practiced here, the nativity is foreign to him, and he spends a moment staring at it before turning his gaze elsewhere.
Huaisang had spoken to him about candles and incense, about remembrance of the dead, and as such the votives catch his attention and hold it for a good long period of time. Eventually he approaches, looking at the setup and...hesitating, honestly, for a good long while before lighting the first candle of several.
Samidare. Zola. Riku. C-ta. Gin. Yor…
There are so many that have gone, so many candles lit by the end. He doesn't leave once he's done; he just stands there looking at the small flames flickering in the dim light, his gaze intense but unreadable.]
[BOUTIQUE]
[Granted, he isn't going to stay out in the cold forever; he's in the boutique looking for warmer clothes (the armor seems...ill-advised out there) when he sees it for the first time in one of the mirrors.
He isn't sure what he should do with it when he does see it - though perhaps them would be a better way of phrasing it, he sees them, and he hasn't seen them in a long enough time that this strikes him as surreal rather than painful. The pain will come later, he's sure, right now he's just strangely numb as he reaches out, hand to the surface of the full-length mirror he's staring into for a brief moment before he turns away abruptly, folding the clothes he's been messing with in such an agitated way that you'd think they owe him money.]
Another insult from this place. It's not going to work.
[It's more to himself than anything, but it's out there anyway.]

Later in the day, he'll give in to his curiosity about whether he still remembers how to skate or not. With a look of determination, he roughly tugs those skates on and then... sits there. For a long time, his gaze is stuck on the reflective surface, face going pale and determined expression cooling to melancholy. The tremble in his limbs could be passed off as cold, but he gives up on trying to stand for the moment. Instead, he lets his head fall atop his drawn knees as his skates mark lines into the snow. Deep breaths, in and out, are still visible in the cold air despite his position.
Of course, he'll be found wandering from the lodgings kitchen (if someone would like coffee or breakfast in the morning), the boutique (see the p.s. below), and around random places in the new area as well, so feel free to wildcard him anywhere you please.
P.S. Makoto did the logical thing once he saw and felt that cold on accident, so he's tried to find the closest version of what he's used to from back home (unless someone wants to help him make more fashionable choices at the boutique). ]

investigation!!!!
[Edelgard has been piling on layers with a grumble. She'd gone to explore before realising that it's freezing without the correct gear. She looks a bit ridiculous, given the mismatched nature of the clothing. She stares into the mirror, looking at her outfit.
Then, suddenly, her eyes widen and she takes a step back with a scowl.]
...more tricks. Every week it's the same.
Church
[Edelgard stares up at the church with nearly open disdain. More religion, even here.
She enters, running her fingers over the benches. To anyone nearby, she'll ask.]
Is religion as mandatory in your homeland as it is in mine?
[She's going to spend the rest of the time investigating the church and looking for secrets, thoroughly. Specifically any hidden messages planted here or hidden compartments.]
Maze
I don't think we should go in alone.
[She's rubbing her hands, slumped in on herself and miserable, and turns to whoever's nearby.]

TUESDAY

[ As has become part of his usual routine now, Phil intends to make a quick stop in the empty room to make sure there's nothing new happening with the mirror there — quick enough that he just leaves the door open behind him while he takes a look. There hasn't been anything of note in here since he was last able to see that shimmer that allowed him into the mirror over a week ago, so he isn't expecting much, but today... there's something different.
Ah...
He thought he'd seen them in the mirror in his own room yesterday, but then it had disappeared so quickly that he thought he must have just been imagining it. The image is staying there much longer this time, though; and hesitantly, he reaches out to touch the glass... just in case.
...Well, he wasn't really expecting that to do anything, but he's a little disappointed anyway. ]
snowy streets
[ Later on, once he's shaken himself out of that, he puts on a coat and a dark blue scarf and heads out to the new area to get a more in depth look at things for himself; he hadn't quite been prepared for the cold when he first went out there yesterday, and he's learned from his mistakes. He walks along the streets for a bit, taking in the sight of the bright red holly berries on the bushes against the backdrop of the snow and the colorful lights decorating the trees, smiling softly to himself. ]
It really does feel a little like Christmas.
church
[ He eventually heads in the direction of the church, where he first pauses outside, looking thoughtfully and maybe a little sadly at the stained glass window, where for just a second in the right light, you might catch sight of another figure in the reflection... but it's hard to quite make out the fractured image in that colorful kaleidoscope.
Eventually he wanders inside — a little warmth is much appreciated after that walk — where he takes in the general scenery before his attention is drawn in particular to a set of figurines that seems to be depicting a scene in which a couple put their baby into... some sort of... trough or something in a stable, while the animals look on.
He leans in, looking at it curiously. ]
Hm... I wonder who these are supposed to be.

Yes, there will be a reminder that anyone can watch from start to finish --or even help out if they know more about baking cakes than these two do. No, cyanide is not an ingredient.
The prize for stopping by will be a piece of cake, along with an offer of coffee or tea. What they will be attempting to make looks something like this, a strawberry sponge cake with fresh strawberries sourced from candyland (results may vary as neither of them are really bakers but at least Makoto can cook).
For prep Makoto will be carefully putting the batter together and leaving Suga in charge of stirring after a demonstration. Once the cake makes it into the oven to bake, they'll be around the kitchen keeping an eye on it, enjoying warm drinks. While the cake is cooling so it can be layered and frosted, they will be getting all of those strawberries cut and ready along with whipping the frosting. Of course, at some point the cake will be finally finished and ready to be shared. Wait too long though and they'll probably already be sampling it themselves. ]

[ Since the start of the week, Morgan seems noticeably on edge. She's not exactly been the most social, but she seems to be giving everyone a wider berth than normal. Is she giving everyone space? Is everything that's been going on affecting her? Hard to tell.
She decides to head to the boutique, seemingly looking for something other than warm clothing when she happens to cross in front of one of the mirrors. There's a tall man that comes into view, watching her with a stern expression. She stops once she notices him in her peripheral vision, and stares. She thought she had seen him out of the corner of her eye before, but she thought she was just seeing things. ]
You sure took your time. Do you know how long it's been since —
[ Her words die in her throat as she happens to look over the man's shoulder, seeing... someone else in the distance. They're turned away, and it's hard to really see who it is, but apparently it's enough for Morgan to recognize them as she goes rigid.
...
And then her fist collides with the mirror. Her hand is probably going to get pretty cut up pretty good, as there's already signs of bleeding, but she could really care less right now. ]
around
[ Once she gets her hand bandaged up, she goes out to explore the new area. If she's bothered by the cold, she doesn't exactly make it known - she was just on the moon not that long ago, so this probably isn't really that terrible. She pokes around the different facilities, making an extra effort to avoid any of the will-o'-wisps. She'll nod in acknowledgement as she passes by or comes up by someone, raising her unbandaged hand in greeting. ]
It's strange how festive this place is. It almost feels... sad, somehow.
[ Which is just her on a constant basis, but whatever. ]

First, however, someone might notice in the lodgings that there's an open door to one of the dorms. Specifically the dorm room of the bird that had passed on. There's the sound of...rummaging in there. Perhaps someone will want to investigate that.
Later, a living bird can be found flying in the new area, noticeably awkward with his maneuvering to avoid being snowbound. The shiver he gives is not imagined, pulling the green tie tighter and closer to himself as he flies over the skating rink, looking down as he considers going back to gra-]
Scheisse!
[The impromptu landing is less than graceful, but Pericles is unharmed after making contact with the snow. He pops his head out from the hole he made, staring at the ice...the closest thing to fear he's displayed while here.
Someone was not happy with what he saw.
Later than that, if your willing to look inside a cabin, perched on the back of a chair will be the parrot, looking your way after your entrance.]
I...do not enjoy the colt.

And so he doesn't! Instead, he can be found at his new stomping grounds, the archery range, where he seems to have found what Yuri had left there the day before- his transform bow! He seems a lot more at home shooting with it compared to the standard bow he'd purchased with crystals the previous week.
Once he's through with training, he starts to head back toward his boat to cross the lake, but finds himself frozen in place by what he sees at the shore. A reflection in the water, of...someone dear, but also long gone. He sits down, curls in on himself, and watches for as long as the reflection remains.]
...would you really be so supportive of what I've become?
[He quietly murmurs to seemingly no one but the reflection, though it could certainly be picked up by others passing by.
Later in the evening, Raven can be found in the kitchen making...hot chocolate?! Yeah, even he looks surprised with himself. Anyone joining him in there will get a defensive response.]
I'm not usually one fer sweets, but I needed somethin' cozy and you'd be amazed at how good hot chocolate tastes with a bit of peppermint liqueur.
[Good thing the bar had plenty of that lying around.]

[The church is where he'll be spending a fair amount of time that evening, tending to the votives and keeping the candles burning for the dead. It keeps him more or less away from most reflective surfaces, at the very least; the stained glass is darkened enough for him that it causes less of a problem. He seems to be muttering something to himself, quiet but intense, steady and rhythmic; his gaze is fixed on the candles as he does it, and unlike last time he seems rather unaware of anyone joining him until he's spoken to - at which point he'll at least stop whatever he was saying to himself, the incantation or invocation or...whatever it was dying out immediately.]
[ROOM 24]
[Granted, if you're in the halls of the lodging area tonight, you'll hear a sharp crack and a sound of shattering, implying that we're down another mirror. Alexei hadn't even gotten the damn door closed before the visions started up in the full-length, and given from the angle that JRPG sword seems to have come at the mirror from, it looks like he just straight-up threw the damn thing. Fortunately, his aim is good; unfortunately, that's a hell of a lot of glass that he seems determined to deal with- ...later, you know what he's going to deal with that later, he's currently going to deal with this by not dealing with it at all and storming off to the lounge if he's not stopped.
He won't be breaking anything else, but that...happened, he supposes.]

[Today has been a lot - the meeting with the letters, the suspicion, the still present reflections - but at least there's one good thing that's come out of it.
You can find Suga in the training grounds with a sword whose blade is made from a pale blue stone and grows slightly. He's swinging it with much more confidence than he ever had with an iron sword - the weight and grip of it is deeply familiar to him.]
[Docks]
[He'd meant to ask someone here if they could help ferry him to the other side for some investigations, but... that unfortunately leaves him near a reflective surface for a while.
So anyone who happens to be here or comes across him can find him staring into the lake, the image of a young girl flickering on its surface.]

THURSDAY
BIQUE X-MAS(???!) BONFIRE BONANZA
It truly is cold here, but there's hot and gently bubbling oden courtesy of Marcus, roasted chestnuts and mulled wine from Makoto, other drinks and sundry snacks thanks to the help of Suga and Raven and anyone else who wanted to pitch in or even bring their own marshmallows (how big are these marshmallows it's anyone's guess). Anyone who really needs to get toasty can also take refuge in the cabins!
There's also an even more impressive stack of wood behind one of the cabins proper, brought over from the friendlier forests and climes of the other areas -- here Alexei, McGillis, Marcus and any other helpers, gawkers or aspiring lumberjacks may be found plying their extremely temporary trade. Scant outfits not-so-practical for winter and morale booster eyecandy for all? Why not.]
