CHAPTER 5

Almost half of the non-fairy population of Aira Niluc is gone.

Some may be feeling the absence of their fellow participants in this story. Others will stay focused on the wish they want to get. What never changes is that the story goes on, bringing you closer to the end -- and to another chapter. What will it bring this time?

Snow!

Snow as far as the eye can see, a cold blanket covering the new area. Some winter amenities are now available, ready for perusal! But that's not all there's to find: everyone also will find reminders of their homes, of people they know, of happier times.

Oh, yeah! In Japan, it's usually a time to spread happiness. And, you know, spend time with people you really care about.

[ He tries to keep the tinge of pain out of his smile, since it's been a long time since he actually celebrated with anyone in Japan itself. But it's brief once his thoughts wander to the happier Christmas he'd had before this place, warmth brightening his expression when he starts to talk about it -- ]

But it's a holiday that's celebrated all over the world, and it's a little different everywhere. Like in France, it's an even bigger deal than in it is in Japan. Decorations everywhere, Christmas markets with all kinds of food I'd never tried before. It's pretty amazing, actually.

[ When he mentions loved ones, she flexes her bandaged hand and winces, but it's also gone just as quickly as she listens to him talk about it with a bright look on his face. ]

That sounds nice. [ she tilts her head slightly. ] Do you go to France often?

Not recently, no. But I lived there for a bit.

... Did you visit anywhere else besides Japan?

[ She shakes her head. ]

Not in the human world. I was only there for a few weeks, at most, before coming here.

[ or however long it takes to embed yourself into a college campus and gain everyone's trust long enough to start motorcycle racing??? idk ]

[ Makoto nods at that. ]

Well, that means you got to try some Japanese food then, right? I still say it's the best, but I almost wish I had the chance to show you more of the human world though.

There's a lot of interesting places, so many different people, you know? ... Or, maybe you don't, sorry.

[ His gaze wanders from her to the snowy landscape before glancing back with a smile. ]

Have you checked out a lot of this new area yet?

[ She blinks at his earnestness, seemingly a little taken back by the offer. But he moves on, and it's easy for her to do so, too. ]

No, it's all right. My experience is limited, but I know what you mean.

[ When he asks about whether she's checked out the area, she tilts her head. ]

Not quite yet. Have you found anything interesting?

Yeah, actually. There are warm cabins if you get too cold and a church if you wanna see more Christmas stuff.

Oh, and an ice skating rink. [ Makoto laughs, lightly. ] I was surprised I still remember how to skate, it's been so long.
But... I bet you've never tried, right?

[ Yes, he saw the maze. No, he doesn't want to think about it. Too spooky. ]

[ Yeah, that might be a little much for her when she checks it out. Way too many reflective surfaces in there. ]

I don't think I have. [ pauses ] Is it easy?

[ Maybe not the best thing to try with her hand the way it is, but. She's still curious. ]

Well, sometimes. But it's a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.

You know... once your hand is feeling better I could teach you. If you want.

[ She kind of. Looks at him with a weird look when he offers to teach her that's a little hard to place. Maybe a little sad? Who knows. But it's gone, and she nods. ]

Sure. That sounds nice.

[ Makoto takes that look as her doubting her potential here, for better or worse. ]

Okay, I'll hold you to it then. And hey, don't worry, I'm sure you'll be great at it.
