He and I both knew the risks. Has he been causing trouble on the other end?

I don't know. I haven't been checking -- but I do know those poor restless souls have been even more restless than usual lately. It doesn't really matter, nothing some haunting ghosts do can change anything.

You're not checking in on your meals as they are in progress? I'd have expected you would, given you appear to be a dedicated cook.

[ With a small gesture towards the feast prepared. ]

Oh, it doesn't matter to me. Didn't you notice?

[The fridge opens, a block of ice sliding out. It's shaped like the ice maze]

The ghosts are nothing to me. They're just some...unwelcome reminders, so I stashed the ones I could find -- those children. After we're done here I'll go, claim what I wanted, and then get everyone who died's souls in here.

[Looks like their souls and what she consumes are different things. It's a bit abstract, apparently]

[ Huh. That changes a lot of base assumptions they'd been operating on. McGillis will actually take a seat, though he isn't eating and keeping his chair far enough from the table that he can easily get back up. ]

What is it you wanted, then? Hamelin said we were working to give you people's 'essence', but that clearly means something different to you than it would to me.

What do you think it is? 'Essence' is about right, but do you have any idea about it?

[Looks like she's not grading this response in particular, hah. It's as if she's trying to be friendly by inviting her guests to speak freely]

Is it something like their motivation, their drive forward, the part of them that strives for more and keeps them going?

My, not bad! Something like that. It's...life! As simple as that. Everything that makes you live and feel and want. I fulfill it, they have the time of their lives, and then I claim it and they die.

[Something about her tone is a little strained. That's how it works with her usual prey, at least -- that seems to be the unsaid addition to such a sentence]

That's curious though. Nobody here is fulfilled, right now.

There is a little girl I intend to make very happy and my disappearance would be quite the hindrance to that.

There isn't necessarily anything so black and white as a "body" and "soul". In our world, at least, a person has both anima and animus — one can be thought of as the spark of life that provides vital energy of a specific type; and the other is the blueprint for that person's life, comprised of their memories along with their physical body and genetic factors. That information that makes up the person's identity is still there even when broken down into individual particles. There might be a similar distinction for her.
