It could be she needs something about the essences that you only get from people who are stuck in a situation like this. A specific emotion, in other words.

Oh, that's an interesting idea. A game that forces people into feeling a certain way would explain that, ja? Feeding on adults must be different for her than feeding on children, and if for whatever reason she couldn't bring children, then she might have had to resort to something like this.

She could need the fear, or maybe the despair from losing your chance at having your wish granted.

That's what I'm thinking. It likely would be easy for her to get that from them... but adults have seen far scarier things than monsters.

[Especially when you fight literal monsters daily!!!]

So putting us in a situation like this would certainly generate fear or despair in quite a few of us - she'd likely be able to pick off some she could consume from there...

Maybe that's why she presumably hasn't managed to eat any of the others? Because they aren't feeling what she needs them to?

Given how hopeful they've all seemed in the letters they've been sending us, I'm gonna guess you're right. They're not giving in to despair, so she can't eat them yet.

... that's why they keep telling us not to give up either.

That makes sense! Their notes this week were far more encouraging than they've been in the past, so perhaps they worked that one out. That's good, though; we certainly aren't inclined to despair at this point!

Given the focus on "love" in the rabbit's statement, perhaps that's what she was feeding off of children? And if she's specifically devouring the dead, they've had their wishes taken away, they've had their greatest desires dangled in front of their noses, attempted to snatch it, and lost everything...

Perhaps... despair?

Ja, I think that makes sense. She certainly wasn't trying to foster "love" here, so she likely tried a different approach with us. Despair certainly would be easy to create in a situation like this!

Anger tends to trump despair in most cases. You can kick someone all you want and while they may think they're broken, they're still likely to jump at the chance to slash your throat.

I think we're all at that point where we're eager to go for the throat, ja? She really did underestimate us.

It was mentioned by Alexei from the rabbit that she would treat children well until she didn't and ate them... that's probably similar of a feeling. Imagine a lady acting like a mom you've always wanted and spoiling you, then...
