CHAPTER 6

The dead now outnumber the living.

There's only one area that stayed a mystery until now. A new path revealed itself, leading to another town, surrounded by sturdy stone walls. Even from some distance away you can see the tower, rising high towards the skies. The path that leads to the city turns into gold before long, and the sky itself seems to take a beautiful tone, like it's painted with watercolors. It's such a peaceful-looking town, welcoming you with open gates. It must be nice to have another urban setting, after living in the same place for so long.

But no matter what you find it doesn't change the situation you're in. Now that your numbers are dwindling that's impossible to forget.

The story is nearing its end. There still are a handful of pages left. What will they bring?

Yeah. I finally had the time to test it out here, actually. Even before this recipe.

Because you're using time instead of heat, it's less bitter.

[ Makoto rambles it off like he barely has to think about it.

As far as beds go -- he is not a certain beefy blond. Keep your bed a mess, it's no skin off his nose. But coffee is another story. ]

Yeah, it does. And lucky for us, I already started on that part.

For concentrate it's... [ Don't mind him checking his pocketwatch here. ] 14 hours total, so mine has... like an hour or something left.

But I guess it wouldn't hurt to use it a little early if you want me to grab them?

...oh, alright.

[ Saying this like he understands, but he barely does because he doesn't really have a cooking bone in his body, so to speak.

And wow. Well, he will do his best not to ruin the coffee jello thing?? Jury is out because ants and whatever happens next with that. Just let it be known he tried.

There's an even longer pause when he realizes just how long it would have taken for it to be properly made. His eyes are a little teary as he looks at him. ]

Makoto...you're the best, okay? If you don't mind grabbing them for me, please do!

[ Makoto looks over, laughing softly before he answers him properly. ]

Okay, as long as you promise to help me with the rest of this. [ gesturing at the recipe. ]

Be right back.

[ Makoto leaves. It didn't seem like a great idea to leave things around that could be tampered with, so give him time to head upstairs and return with three sealed containers. One is clearly darker than the rest and set out with the other ingredients.

The lighter ones have Makoto grinning. ]

These ones, we can drink.

I will, I promise!

[ ...Makoto is going to need to make sure Huaisang isn't a disaster at it but it will and can be done!!

Thankfully he does wait and makes sure not to touch anything. But he does stare at at containers in a little bit of wonder. ]

Oh really? They're the tastier ones, then?

[ Ah, so he will be getting assigned Suga level duties then. Hope he thinks whisking is fun.

Makoto plays in to that wonder, holding one up carefully for inspection like he's proud of himself.
He'll talk about this all day. ]

Yeah, that's right. The concentrate is just less water and more coffee, so it would probably be really strong to drink on its own, but these should be really good.

It's all the flavor of coffee without the bitterness. I even used coarser grounds for it this time so I can't wait to try it.

We can celebrate with them when we're done, since it still needs some time, what do you say?

[ Huaisang starts complaining during whisking but doesn't actually stop when he's asked to, because he's serious about helping...it's just light-hearted whining anyway!!

Anyway, he will watch as the other man holds up one carefully with what seems to be with some pride. ]

Wow, Makoto...you're really an expert at this, aren't you?

[ He knows like, zip, about coffee, but even this sounds like the rambling of someone who's dedicated. ]

But, yes, I agree to us going ahead with that. Oh, maybe we should also grab something from the bakery to have with it? Like some sweet bread or something...

[ Good job. So let's pretend that is cooling then, now that the ingredients (measured and added by Makoto), have been whisked in the boiling water. ]

Guess you could say that, but I actually I've never tried making cold brew before this place.

Yeah, let's do it. But... any ideas what we're going to do with this stuff after it's done?

[ There it is!

After all that hard work, he's going to be lounging with some snacks he probably went to grab anyways. ]

Wait, really?

[ He was so sure Makoto had... ]

Oh, do you mean the finished product or whatever is left over of the stuff?

Yeah! I mean, I've made a lot of regular coffee before so I guess I had an unfair advantage.

[ Shrug, but he's still looking mighty proud of himself. ]

Oh. Both? But for the finished product-- do you think we're supposed to eat it? Or... ?

Oh, I guess so.

[ ... ]

I'm...not sure, actually. I was planning to try it on one of the books to see if it would reveal its secrets.
