The clink of glasses, the clatter of utensils upon plates and the soft murmur of conversation flows smoothly in the warmly lit dining hall. It's a dinner party, a rather vivacious one at that, with the food flowing freely. Savory and sweet, regional specialties, refined and rustic, there's something for everyone. Omurice, chiffon cake, kimchi, sizzling porterhouse steaks—it might be more apt to call it a buffet than anything else.

Do buffets usually serve such a unique smorgasbord of food? And actually, weren't you doing something else? A free meal is usually a good thing but is anything truly free? Who are these people around you? And where exactly are you?

Whatever thoughts are racing through your mind, they're abruptly cut off by a note, high pitched G-sharp from a woodwind. All your senses return to you, though they won't tell you much. Maybe not all of them actually, if you're used to feats of heroic strength or manipulating reality or numerous other abilities. There is one clue at least, a heavy weighted paper beneath your plate, an embossed note rather than a list of courses.

"Enjoy yourselves. I'll come see you when you've had your fill. And don't try to dine and dash, huh? There's something I have—something I can do for you, after all. Besides, you've already agreed to the terms anyway!"

[ Hmm... He's been watching in the background for some time, content not to weigh in. This, though, catches his attention. He's not a particularly violent person, nor is he all that keen to suddenly attack someone.

But it looks like the skydwellers (?) are both cautious and curious. So, he'll lend them a hand. ]

... I see, and I offer my heartfelt apologies in advance.

[ Raises his hand and just kind of. Tries to slap Hamelin?? Across the cheek??

It won't really hurt even if it connects, tbh. ]

Hey, what kinda hit was that?

[ It does connect and he just looks...confused? ]

[oversaw]

[ So nothing really did happen. Except him looking confused, which in turn confuses Lucifer. ]

I believe it was a slap.

[ Did he do it wrong? Should he try again? ]

At least throw a punch? What are you wearing all that armor for, or do you really just get into slapfighting contests to solve everything?

[ now he sounds disappointed!?!? god lucifer. ]

My intention was to test your response, not cause harm. Would you have reacted differently to a punch?

[ weird reaction tho, just sayin'. must be belial 2.0 ]

I'd be less disappointed, for one.

[ actually just belial 2.0 ]

In other words, you enjoy battle. I take it that means we're free to challenge you whenever we wish?

I do, doesn't any man? But yeah, challenge me whenever you want. Don't think I'll just give you your weapons and stuff back though, the field's gotta stay even for the story.

I wouldn't expect someone who stripped another of their power to return it freely. [ not even for the sake of a fair fight. ]

What of you, then? If your capabilities are higher than ours, won't you find the battle boring?

[begrimed]

At this point? I should find a lotta things boring.

[ Whatever that means. ]

As long as it's an actual fight? It won't be.

If you have that much of a death wish, you could at least commit a little harder.

[ bruh!! also, death wish? the guy said he wasn't gonna kill anyone so why would he kill someone for smacking him ]

That would defeat the point.

Ah, I know! You're an angel, aren't you, helping us out in our time of need... But you shouldn't take so many risks by yourself, even if you're some kind of mysterious super strong warrior...?

[It's a good thing that in this timeline he has not had anime character explained to him yet, so Luci gets to be an angel with his zillion wings instead! He may keep his dignity and completely non-chuuni wits about him.

Anyway Jack is totally sincere with this. His eyes are even sparkling a little. Maybe it's the wings, maybe it's Maybelline--]

[ oh? since the six wings on his back are pretty obvious, he isn't completely surprised to hear someone referring to him as an angel. even if he isn't surprised though, he's startled to find himself comforted by the familiarity of it. so many skydwellers have had the exact same reaction.

he pauses as he reminisces, then nods to confirm, yes, "angel" is about right. then moves on. ]

I appreciate your concern, but there's no need to waste your worry on me. Moreover, I don't believe someone who brought us here would waste their efforts by killing their captives.

[ also, hamelin said they wouldn't die if they struck him. if nothing else, the risk was worth learning whether or not that was a lie. ]

[He seems particularly pleased to have his wild conjecture accepted or affirmed or whatever went on there -- tacit as it was, Jack is an easily pleased fellow. Still, there's a gentle shake of his head at the rest.]

But I must insist, there is no such thing as wasted worry here. We are all in this together, despite... the situation. [you know, the situation that kind of wants to turn them against each other, there's no sense in not acknowledging it -- but] And... it is not only death we have to worry about, I'm sure.

This is absolutely no ordinary realm, by any measure.

[ ... All in this together. Lucifer closes his eyes for a moment as he ponders that.

Being part of something like this is new to him. Actually, being part of anything with mortals is new to him. ] I understand, and I would like to rescind my statement.

Thank you for your concern. [ He's not all that used to people worrying for him either, honestly. ] I've yet to discern the nature of this realm, but I suspect it is a closed space.
