THIRD INVESTIGATION
INVESTIGATION III
Some days are long and some days are short. If this wasn't the third week of your stay, perhaps you might think that exhaustion had crept in from Wednesday's nights activities. But you know better than that by now.
Consciousness comes to you groggily, perhaps uncomfortably depending where you were when sleep suddenly took hold of you. While the world stands on the verge of awakening as the horizon blazes with a fiery glow, the sky remains a navy blue where you are.
The time is 5:00 AM. You could return to your slumber, but do you really think third time's the charm?

And again and again: like the clocktower spinning wildly the first day here, like the neverending rounds of a pocketwatch, a song that goes on forever -- though not for Jack, there's just a blank in his expression and in his thoughts once the announcement comes in; he stops where he's bent at the kitchen sink to wash his face again after the kitchen floor fiasco, trying to make sure all the cake is out of his hair and eyelashes and eyebrows.
(Trying to wash away the budding knowledge, through the hammering disorientation of rather too much sleep, that there is nothing about this situation that isn't terribly wrong and terribly off-course already. He checked his pocketwatch soon enough after he woke up, as always. Everything is off.)
Two more losses. Two more losses, none of this is slowing down, and regardless of what they next find, the trial will be beyond imagining.]
What could we have done...? Why did you... why did you...
[He spends a little too long watching the water drip from his hair back into the sink.]

just. concern. ]
... Something wrong?
[ trying to distract him a bit!!! ]

Sleeping in the kitchen really isn't good for anything at all. And they can't stay here any longer nor waste any more time, since frankly it's been too long already.]
I want to say it is not real until we see the bodies. There are a lot of things... [there's a shade of something that wants to be a smile, sliding surprisingly easily over the lack of expression there when he turns back around] For now, if you need to investigate... you should go ahead.
I will be there to see them off at the end.
[As he has been; he'll just be a little slower to get there.]

so he'll take jack at his word for now, head inclined slightly before nodding. ]
I will see what I can glean of this week's killers from the bodies. If anything--
[ he trails off. it's the least he can do. ]
... I will see you later, then.

Have a concerned expression Jack. ]
... Take your time, okay?
[ And off he goes with the tall(er) sus(er) blond. ]

[Somehow that comes out easily as well, a practiced sort of reassurance.
He does look a little more himself and a little more present, if a little ruffled still because all of them sure did spend the night on the table and the floor. And standing up, in one memorable case. There's a small nod and another attempt at a smile for Makoto, seeing him out.
As for Jack, he'll be making his way out a little later, to check on the detailed information, and then true to his word he'll be by to see the dead. But as with past weeks... he will probably need to be ready if he wants to give the bodies a proper sendoff before the trial. Judging by the past week, he might need even more preparations this time; it's an absolute mess out there.
But it's something to do until the inevitable gathering.]
