Good Morning. Did you sleep well? It certainly feels like you have, perhaps too well, even for those who don't normally sleep. Maybe that's to be expected in this fairy tale, maybe it was only a matter of time.

MANSION -- INTERIOR

[ Well, that sure was an announcement. McGillis will head out to investigate because he did use to be... a military inspector, which is not remotely a criminal detective, but hey.

He still has his mug of coffee in hand as he arrives inside the mansion, might as well finish it as he goes.

What kind of rooms are there? ]

[ Close enough McGillis. Mansions are pretty large but the focal points are: the kitchen, and the attic. Where are you having your morning cup of joe today? ]

[ He'll work his way up from the door, so the kitchen is first. Is there anything notably in disarray? If there isn't, he'll move to check any knife blocks for missing knives because that's always a good start. ]

[ Everything seems pretty tidy, actually! The knives in the knife block are all there and accounted for, but while McGillis is standing at the counter taking apprise of pointy objects he might notice it's a bit warm in here. ]

[ ... alright, how's stove and oven looking? Anything he needs to turn off and prevent a house fire, or is something here recently used?

Is anything in the oven or on the stove? ]

[ The stove and the oven both look fine on first glance and nothing is burning, that certainly would have grabbed McGillis' attention right away. A further check does reveal that the oven is on, but barely so.

The oven, like the stove, is also empty. ]

[ ... okay, if it's only on barely he will not turn it off yet.

But he will open it and sniff the inside. Smell of anything specific? ]

[ It's not overwhelming but assuming he's really getting in there, it smells lightly earthy. ]

[ Yeah, why not like... stick his whole head in an oven, like the witch in Hänsel and Gretel. This is just how it is sometimes.

Okay, next check, does the kitchen have flour or starch? He's intending to take some crude fingerprints and he needs to know which supplies he needs to gather from outside. ]

[ It does have flour! ]

[ Great. Just let him brb then as he speedwalks to the general store to obtain some tape and any smooth dark surface he can find (paper preferred, but he'll settle for a cardboard box or something).

And then it is time to dust the oven handle with flour, gently blow excess away, put tape over, stick tape to his surface and... see if that produces anything that looks even halfway usable.

His hopes aren't high but it's worth a try. ]

[ With how tall he is, isn't McGillis speedwalking like running? He can secure a piece of paper pretty easily so welcome back to the kitchen!

His impromptu CSI dusting reveals a smudged fingerprint. It's not really serviceable though, unfortunately. ]

[ NOBODY CAN SAY HE DIDN'T TRY. He'll keep it and also turn the oven off.

Is anything in the kitchen visibly out of place? He's raised one of the empty house kitchens for a private tea party before, so he sort of knows how these places are supposed to look standardized. ]

[Let's say Raven tagged along due to coffee interruption. He's in a much worse mood—seriously, why one of the kids?—but he's ready to investigate.

He'll split up to cover more ground and take the attic! What's going on up here?]

[ Because we just can't have nice things.

Welcome to the attic! The very first thing he'll notice is the sky? That's certainly a section of roofing that's given way to the outdoors. It's not a particularly large hole, but seeing as it's a bright sunny day it's pretty noticeable. ]

[Well, that's definitely not what he expected when he walked in.

After glancing at the hole itself, he scours the floor for debris. Did something fall down in here?]

[ There's a small pile of rooftiles right below the hole, which is probably to be expected. ]

[Yep, that's what he was looking for! He'll come over to inspect the tiles. Anything here that could help clue him in on what caused the hole?]

[faentasy]

[ Well. There's a chisel in the pile of debris which sure is a thing. ]

[reallyfishy]

[It sure is! Raven reaches for it. Before he picks it up, is there anything on it like blood or other debris?]

[faentasy]

[ There's no blood on the chisel or any other debris beside some dust. What is pretty apparent is that the point of said chisel has been sharpened with care. ]

[reallyfishy]

[He'll definitely be sure to handle it with care when he picks it up, then! How heavy is it, by the way? Like, heavy enough that it'd be feasible for it to have made the hole? Or is there something else around that fits the bill more?]

[faentasy]

[ It's not light but it's not super heavy. While it's theoretically feasible it could have made the hole, it's pretty unlikely.

As for the rest of the attic, there isn't anything else around that seems to fit that bill: the place is mostly empty aside from a few empty wooden boxes. ]

[Hmmm! Very intriguing.

Aside from the hole and chisel, is there anything else out of place? Any other holes or cracks in the ceiling?]
